What you should know
What the infusion is, when it may be considered and what we clarify with you beforehand.
The method
What is a vitamin C infusion?
Vitamin C (ascorbic acid) is a water-soluble vitamin that the body cannot produce itself and can hardly store. For the infusion, an ascorbic acid solution is diluted with a carrier solution, for example saline, and given slowly through a cannula into a vein in your arm. Unlike tablets or capsules, the vitamin enters the blood directly.
When may it be considered?
The medicine we use is approved for treating clinical vitamin C deficiency that cannot be corrected through diet or by taking vitamin C by mouth. Such a deficiency can occur, for example, with absorption disorders of the gut, chronic inflammatory diseases or after surgery. Whether an infusion makes sense for you, we decide together with you after a consultation and examination.
Vitamin C in orthopaedics and trauma surgery
Vitamin C is involved in the formation of collagen, the main protein in bones, tendons, ligaments and skin. A marked deficiency can impair wound healing. Research is also looking at whether vitamin C can lower the risk of complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS, formerly Sudeck’s disease) after fractures and surgery on the arms and legs. The evidence is mixed. Whether and in which form vitamin C makes sense for you, we discuss in a medical consultation.
Contraindications
With certain conditions and medicines, a vitamin C infusion must not be given or only with particular caution. Examples are kidney disease and G6PD deficiency (an inherited enzyme deficiency of the red blood cells). We clarify these contraindications with you in a personal consultation before the infusion.
